The colourful world of fish

This section on marine fish showcases the colourful fish that inhabit various marine ecosystems. Fish make up the largest group of vertebrates, and nearly half of the world's fish species can be found in the ocean. They are diverse in their characteristics, colour and body form but what unites them is the presence of a swim bladder which is an air filled organ that helps them swim and stay afloat. There are over 18,000 species of saltwater fish in oceans around the world, and this number keeps changing due to fluctuating populations and estimates based on predation, fishing pressure, etc. Marine fish have several adaptations that ensure that excess salts don't accumulate in their bodies. Sadly, due to several pressures like pollution, overfishing, aquarium and exotic pet trade, and climate change, all these colourful fish are facing threats in their environment.
